Hello Families,

Next week is the last week of school before the winter break. The students' last day of school is Thursday December 19th. It is a full day.
The Winter Celebration through song will take place on Wednesday morning at 8:30 and also on Thursday afternoon at 1pm. You are all invited to attend.
We have had lots of fun exercising in our gym classes through dance this week, developing movement skills and good posture.
In math we continue to work on subtraction word problems - complete, incomplete, extra information and create their own.
The grade 3s completed their focus on building in science by constructing a giant bridge. It was an amazing piece of collaboration and scientific inquiry as they explored what materials to use to build a stable structure. The grade 4s continued to explore simple machines, building devices that move through testing and experimentation.
In literacy, the grade 3s finished off their writing on Rapunzel with a STEM activity, in which they constructed a tower and designed a way for Rapunzel to escape. Excellent designs and problem-solving skills were in evidence.
The Grade 4s wrote their own creation stories following their study of traditional stories.
In social studies the G4s formulated questions for their research into different regions of Alberta connecting with human needs. The G3 students finished their study of Peru with a summary of all they have learned about this country and how it compares to Canada.
As always, we ask that you continue to support your child to read every day, and ensure that they have appropriate clothing for the ever-changing weather we experience in Calgary.
Thank you and have a lovely weekend.

December 10, 2019

Hello Cappy Smart Families,

As many of you know, each of our grades host an event (such as Remembrance Day) or a “celebration of learning” assembly at some time throughout the year. December will be a sharing event around some of the work being done in our music classes. While this is NOT a formal concert, parents are welcome to join us to hear what the students have been working on.

To make sure that we are able to include all of our Kindergarten students, we are having two assemblies, the music will be the same at both.

Wednesday Dec 18 - 8:30-9:20
Thursday Dec 19 - 1:00-1:50

If you will be joining us, please let your child’s teacher know so that we can have enough chairs available.

Thank you,
Mr. Bennett

December 9, 2019

We welcomed student doctors from the University of Calgary, who presented an interactive session on healthy eating to the whole school. We hope this will encourage the children to be more open to bringing healthy snacks and lunches to school.
In Gym we have moved to dance, which all the students seem to enjoy.
We learn how to subtract numbers and how to solve word problems involving this operation.
Our grade 3 students have been reading and writing about Rapunzel; this culminated in a STEM activity where they had to design and build a method to help Rapunzel escape from the tower. Some amazing design and construction took place!
The Grade 4 students have been listening to and writing their own creation  stories.
In science the grade 3's have design have designed their own bridges and next week we will collaborate to construct a large bridge in the classroom.
The Grade 4s are building windmills using lego, identifying the simple machines in them, and then using wind power to create electricity.
The grade 3s continue to learn about Peru  in Social Studies and the importance of llamas and alpacas to the culture and economy. This week they created their own looms and have been weaving some pretty spectacular designs.
The grade 4s continue to learn about Alberta asking questions about our province, and are moving towards building a large 3D map.
With just two weeks to go to the start of our winter break on Thursday December 19th, there will be lots going on in the school. We will be having a couple of winter celebrations through song, which you are welcome to join. In health, the students learned about GERMS. As the weather continues to be so changeable and an increasing number of children getting sick, please ensure they wear weather appropriate clothes.

During math period, the students applied their skills of telling the time to create a timetable for the next school year. In addition, we re...
